أقدمت الفا سيدة في الفلبين على إرضاع أطفالهن في مكان عام السبت، بهدف الترويج للإرضاع الطبيعي الذي يساهم في حماية الأطفال من الوفاة المبكرة.

وعلى وقع أغان شعبية محلية أرضعت الأمهات أطفالهن في ملعب مانيلا لتشجيع النساء على الإرضاع في الأشهر الستة الأولى، لما له من أهمية في تقليص نسب الوفيات المبكرة بين الأطفال، وفقاً للمنظمين.

وقالت روس ماكاشور من منظمة "بريست فيدينغ بنايز" غير الحكومية لوكالة فرانس برس: "عدد قليل من النساء يرضعن أطفالهن في الفلبين".

وأضافت أن النساء غالباً ما يرضعن أطفالهن في الأيام الأربع والعشرين الأولى على الولادة، ثم يلجأن إلى حليب الأطفال الذي تنتجه الشركات الكبرى ذات القوة الدعائية الكبيرة.

وكانت دراسة نشرتها منظمة الصحة العالمية في العام 2013 أظهرت أن 34 % فقط من الأطفال دون الستة أشهر في الفلبين يحظون بحليب الأم دون غيره، و36 % لا يحصلون على حليب الأم بتاتاً، وهي أرقام وصفتها المنظمة بأنها مقلقة، ونددت بالحملات الدعائية التجارية لشركات إنتاج حليب الأطفال، التي تساهم في هذه الظاهرة.

وتقول منظمة الأمم المتحدة للطفولة (اليونيسف) إن 28 طفلاً من بين كل ألف في الفلبين يموتون قبل سن الخامسة، علماً أن هذا الرقم كان 56 في التسعينيات، لكنه ما زال أعلى من الهدف المحدد بتسعة عشر طفلاً كحد أقصى.

ورأت ماكاشور أن هذا النوع من الأنشطة يساهم في تبديد الأحكام المسبقة حول الإرضاع، ويشجع النساء على إرضاع أطفالهن من دون أن يشعرن بترهيب من أحد.
